How to Spot a Phishing Email

How to Spot a Phishing Email

Fraudulent e-mails are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and identifying them may be difficult. We bring you practical guidance on how to recognise such messages and protect yourself against potential threats.

Identifying a fraudulent e-mail can sometimes be difficult, but there are several signs you should pay attention to:

  • Check the sender’s e-mail address
Fraudsters often use addresses that resemble official ones (for example, instead of info@akss.sk they may use info@akss-co.sk). If you have any doubts, check the domain (the part after @) and compare it with the organisation’s official contact details.

  • Be cautious of urgent demands or threats
Fraudulent e-mails often contain phrases such as “Respond immediately!”, “Your account will be blocked”, or “Confirm payment now”. Such prompts are intended to create pressure so that you act without thinking.

  • Grammatical errors and unusual language
Fraudulent e-mails are often translated automatically, which is reflected in awkward style or grammatical errors.

  • Unexpected content
If the e-mail contains information about invoices, orders, or campaigns you have never heard of, exercise caution. Verify whether you are in contact with the relevant organisation or service provider.

  • Attachments or links
If the e-mail contains attachments (for example, invoices or court documents) or links that appear suspicious, do not open them. Before clicking on a link, move your mouse cursor over it (do not click) and check where it actually leads. The link address will appear in a tooltip (a so-called pop-up window) or at the bottom of your browser window, depending on its settings and type.

  • Non-standard formatting or logo
Fraudulent e-mails may contain blurred logos, inconsistent colours, or unusual formatting.

  • Requests for sensitive data
Reputable organisations never request passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive information by e-mail.

  • Verify the content through an official source
If you have any doubts, contact the organisation directly using the official contact details provided on its website.

Observing these principles will help you minimise the risk of becoming a victim of fraudsters. Remember that vigilance is your best protection. The more you understand the methods used by fraudsters, the better you will be able to prevent their attempts at misuse.
